"You were entrusted with building a hotel, and you built a church!" - Ekaterina Furtseva, the all-powerful Minister of Culture of the USSR, threw such a remark at architect Leonid Polyakov. And it happened in 1953, before the opening of the new Leningradskaya Hotel on Komsomolskaya Square. Furtseva visited only the rebuilt hotel in order to see with her own eyes the luxury and chic of the Stalinist Empire style, for which untold money was allocated. Later, critics of Stalin's construction blamed the architect of the hotel, L. Polyakov said that he had built an incredibly expensive and luxurious hotel, and allegedly with the money spent it was possible to build a tourist hotel with a thousand rooms. And there were just over three hundred of them in Leningradskaya. Because this is the first hotel in the USSR, in which each room had its own bathroom.node. Except for the Moscow Hotel, but that's another story. And only thanks to the intercession of A. Mikoyan, Polyakov escaped criminal responsibility for the construction of Leningradskaya.
