walking tour of the historic Ponomarev–Arafelov Mansion, now the building of the Library of Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences
We are going to visit the books, but we will see an amazing mansion that has preserved the spirit of the era of merchant life of the early twentieth century. A mansion built by renowned architects who created in Moscow for merchant dynasties and left a mysterious mark on the history of Moscow in the pre-revolutionary era. We will walk along Mokhovaya and Znamenka streets from the exit of the Lenin Library metro station to the Library of Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences and plunge into the mysterious world of Moscow mansions and stories that these buildings have been hiding for more than a hundred years.
During the tour you will learn:
- where was the Kalinin Museum in Soviet times, and why the current Novy Arbat Street was named after the All-Union starosta until 1990.
- what used to be traded on the current Mokhovaya Street.
- why does Znamenka Street have such a name?

You will see:
- preserved interiors of the mansion.

- stucco molding, which decorated the ceilings of one of the halls of the mansion, which retained its appearance under several owners.
- window grilles that decorated the facade of the building, and now decorate the interiors of the mansion.
- the front door, which has retained its appearance since the beginning of the twentieth century.
ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION
The tour of the mansion lasts about 2 hours. The total duration of the tour is about 3 hours.
The tour starts and the group gathers at the Borovitskaya metro station near the end wall near the Friendship Tree panel. Part of the tour takes place outside. When moving from the subway to the mansion, there are crosswalks and a small climb up.
The tour route is on foot, from the Lenin Library metro station to the YONG RAN Library building in about 50 minutes with a story about the history of the mansions on Mokhovaya and Znamenka streets.
The outdoor tour is conducted using a voice amplification system (loudspeaker).
Inside the mansion, stairs are provided up to the 2nd floor.
